Big Lizzie - Victoria
Built in 1915, Big Lizzie was the brainchild of Mr. Frank Bettrill to be used to cart wool from outback stations in the Broken Hill area.
Built in Melbourne, Big Lizzie set out for Broken Hill but crossing the Murray River was considered too dangerous so the machine and trailers were used to cart wheat in the Merbein area. In 1920 the Victorian Government used her to clear trees and scrub to create the largest soldier settlement in Australia – Red Cliffs.
Its final journey in 1925 was to the Balmoral area where she lay on the Glendenning station for some 40 years before being resurrected and placed on display.
