Map the Miner - Kapunda - SA
Map Kernow, also known as Map the Miner is a tribute to the efforts of the Cornish miners in establishing the town back in the 1800s. Map Kernow in Cornish dialect means ‘Son of Cornwall’.
The Kapunda mine was first established in 1844 and closed in 1878. During this period it became the first successful metals mine in Australia produced copper ore and employing up to 340 men and boys, mainly from Cornwall.
Originally unveiled as a 7m fiberglass statue in 1988, it was destroyed by fire in 2006. The new statue was remade in bronze and erected on the original site again in 2007.
