Walpeup Silo Art - Victoria

The Walpeup Silo Art completed in 2023 by Julian Clavijo and Camilo Delgado tells the story of Harold Thomas Bell.

Born in Walpeup in 1901 Harold Bell at the age of 16 lied about his age and name, assuring the recruiters he was 21 and on March 17, 1917 he signed up with the Light Horse Regiment as Harold John Wickham to fight in World War I.

With his background as a bushman he proved his worth to the Army and on June 22, 1917, he sailed for Egypt where he received further training and was assigned a horse and chosen for the Hotchkiss machine gun section.

On 28th October his regiment received their orders and moved out to the battle ensuing in Beersheba. Shot in the leg and critically wounded during a charge on the city Harold Harold died the following day and was laid to rest at the Beersheba War Cemetery.

Army Headquarters sent a telegram to his uncle who was listed on the Army records as his only living relative informing him of his nephews death. His uncle wrote back telling them he did not have a nephew called Harold but did have a son but he could not be in the Army as he was only 16.

The artwork is a fitting tribute to a brave local hero.
