The Big Blade is an actual blade from one of the wind turbines that can be seen on the hills north of Snowtown. At 35m in length the blades are mounted on 64.5m tall towers and standing alongside it gives a true perspective of just how large these wind turbines actually are.
The wind farm was built in two stages and construction commenced in 2007 on the Barunga and Hummock Ranges surrounding Snowtown. Built by Trust Power and Suzion Energy Stage 1 became operational in 2008 with Stage 2 becoming operational in 2014. With a combined capacity of around 378 Megawatts it is one of the largest wind farm in South Australia.
